Hazel Motes

A war veteran who returns home deeply cynical and challenges others’ religious beliefs while mistakenly being viewed as a preacher. He establishes a "Church Without Christ" and delivers anti-religious sermons in Taulkinham.

A peculiar young man drawn to Hazel Motes, who compulsively performs odd actions such as showing Motes a museum corpse and eventually stealing it. He undergoes a transformation, convinced he is meant to become a "gorilla."

An elderly blind preacher who spends his time in Taulkinham handing out religious pamphlets with his daughter. He once blinded himself to prove his faith and avoids Motes because of his aggressive nature.

The young daughter of Asa Hawks, she assists him in distributing pamphlets and becomes infatuated with Hazel Motes. Despite her attempts to be close to Motes, he is largely indifferent to her.
