Part 2, Chapter 16 Summary: “Payment”

Back outside the pawnshop, Keishin demands to know why Hana wouldn’t let the Horishi finish his work. Hana explains that she doesn’t want Keishin to know his fate or else he’ll “lose the ability to dream and hope” (97). Keishin insists that he wants to stay and help Hana find her parents regardless of the cost. Hana suddenly remembers the box of tea that Toshio gave her the night before.

Part 2, Chapter 17 Summary: “The Gift”

Hana and Keishin make the tea from Toshio. Hana thinks that it’s the same tea that Toshio gives their clients and that drinking it will help her understand his whereabouts. When she tastes it, she senses her grandmother Sobo’s presence and realizes that they must visit her teahouse.

Part 2, Chapter 18 Summary: “The Truth Well Told”

Hana and Keishin are finishing their cleaning when the Shiikuin come to inform Hana that they’ll be collecting all the birds in two days. Panicked, Hana realizes that she must find the bird that Toshio set free before then or face exile.
