Character Analysis

Tyler Miller

Tyler, the protagonist, is a high school senior who is on probation for vandalizing the school the year prior. Because of the manual labor he has been doing, Tyler has bulked up over the summer and enjoys newfound attention from the student body, particularly girls. Tyler struggles with his own insecurities and managing his feelings of rage, though ultimately has the strength of character to make wise decisions.

Bill Miller

Tyler’s father is a workaholic with high blood pressure who isolates from his family. Bill does not seem to know how to cope with his son’s struggles, so oscillates between ignoring him and raging at him. Bill realizes he must do better for his family by the end of the novel.

Hannah Miller

Tyler’s younger sister embarks on her freshman year of high school at the beginning of the novel. In contrast to Tyler, she is excited to go to high school and engage in the complicated social hierarchy there. She becomes a cheerleader and dates Yoda, an upperclassman, both of which give her status at school.

Linda Miller

Tyler’s mother cares for her family but struggles to communicate with her husband. She also isolates and/or self-medicates through alcohol. When Tyler comes under investigation for taking photos of Bethany, Linda’s protectiveness surges and seems to give her a new purpose.

Bethany Milbury

Bethany is a longtime crush of Tyler’s and daughter of Bill’s boss. She and her twin brother, Chip, have always been part of the popular crowd. She is attracted to Tyler’s new appearance, coupled with his dangerous allure (based on his vandalism stunt).

Chip Milbury

Chip, Bethany’s twin brother, is an archetypal bully, though he struggles with many of the same issues as other young men his age. It’s hinted at that he is under a great deal of pressure from his father as well.

Calvin/Yoda

Calvin/Yoda is Tyler’s best friend, though he has not undergone the same physical transformation as Tyler and is still prey for bullies. His home life is stable, and he is typically optimistic. He is also the one character who is able to articulate his emotions.

Principal Hughes

Principal Hughes is an authority figure who keeps a watchful eye on Tyler. He wants to be fair and just, but also must run a tight ship.

Joe the Janitor

Joe is one of the positive male role models in Tyler’s life. He takes an interest in Tyler and looks out for him throughout the school year.

Mr. Salvatore

Mr. Salvatore, Tyler’s English teacher, is tough on Tyler at the beginning of the school year but shows him empathy while Tyler is under investigation. He knows Tyler struggles with his academics but nonetheless views Tyler as a good person.

Mr. Benson

Tyler’s probation officer becomes involved in the investigation into Bethany’s photos. Ultimately, he gives Tyler a favorable report.

Brice and Dolores Milbury

Bethany and Chip’s parents admire Tyler’s new physique openly, comparing Chip to him. They are wealthy in contrast to the Millers; Brice is Bill’s boss.

The Student Body/The Rumor Mill

The student body as a whole is its own character in the novel. After Tyler spray-paints the school, he uses the rumor mill to his advantage, becoming something of a legend. When Bethany’s photos appear online, the rumor mill turns on him and makes his life miserable. Throughout the novel, the rumor mill spreads one false story or another on a daily basis.
