  • Disney’s The Little Mermaid (1989) is an animated musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale. This movie personifies the mermaid in question, naming her Ariel, and removes elements from the original fairy tale such as the idea that mermaids lack souls. Ariel falls in love with a human prince named Eric, and after being chastised by her father King Triton, she makes a deal with Ursula, the Sea Witch, to turn her human so that she and Eric can be together. The Sea Witch grants her wish but takes her voice as payment. Her voice will only be returned to her if Eric falls in love with her and kisses her, at which point she will be allowed to remain human. Otherwise, she will turn back into a mermaid and belong to Ursula. To Kill a Kingdom shares many similarities with both the Disney movie and the original Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale.
