Chapter 11 Summary

Adam meets Emily’s family for the first time on the night of his birthday party. Emily reflects on the previous opportunities during which her family tried to meet her boyfriend, all of which Adam canceled. Adam bailed at the last minute on one failed meeting to assist Pammie with an emergency. Adam’s party is immense; his entire rugby team, co-workers, and extended family are in attendance. Emily’s family sits further away from the party, as they dislike rowdy crowds. Adam buys Valerie a bottle of champagne to celebrate meeting each other. Gerald states that he wants to get to know Adam better.

Pammie orchestrates a family photo. Emily thinks she will be included in the photo when Pammie summons her; however, Pammie swaps the camera for Emily’s champagne glass at the last second, requesting Emily take the picture. Adam also excludes Emily, who then struggles to maintain her composure while feeling hurt.

Several hours into Adam’s party, and after much drinking and shenanigans among the rugby players, Adam makes a speech thanking his guests for their attendance. Adam proposes to Emily during this speech, and Pammie abruptly loses consciousness. The evening becomes an emergency as paramedics carry Pammie away on a stretcher.
