Research Paper: “Hate Crimes Against the LGBTQ+ Community”
In this activity, students will write a research paper analyzing hate crimes that have targeted the LGBTQ+ community in the US.
Many of the characters in the play refer to the murder of Matthew as a hate crime. In preparation for your paper, research hate crimes that have targeted the LGBTQ+ community in the US since the publication of this play in 2000. Consider the ways in which the themes The Violent Effects of Anti-LGBTQ+ Bias, Religion and Tolerance, and The Tension Between Spreading Public Awareness and Maintaining Privacy apply to each scenario. Since Kaufman’s play, has the number of nationally reported hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community increased or decreased in the US? What, if anything, has changed since the publication of the play? Draft an abstract of your paper to share with the class, along with relevant supporting sources such as interviews and media clips.
Teaching Suggestion: This Activity invites students to engage in a research project that combines both their analytical skills regarding the themes of the play and their ability to conduct research.
