In this sequel to The Giver, Lowry tells the story of Kira, a young girl who, like Jonas, lives in a dystopian society. She has a special talent for weaving, just as Jonas had the unusual ability to see beyond. This is the second of four books in The Giver quartet, followed by Messenger and Son.

In her speech, Lowry shares memories of the biographical events that inspired her novel. She also discusses the novel’s ambiguous ending and the man whose photo graces the cover. The speech is also included in the 25th anniversary edition of the novel.
