Activity

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Award Ceremony for Amy”

In this activity, students will design an award for Amy and explain the ways in which she is deserving for her contributions in solving a murder.

Design an award for Amy because of her help in solving her grandparents’ murder. Consider elements of the novel that represent Amy’s growth, character, and ingenuity. Then create a written description of the design of the award you used to represent Amy, explaining the ways in which its appearance is symbolic.

  • Identify objects or ideas that represent Amy’s helpfulness and role. Incorporate these representations into your design for an award for Amy.
  • Include symbols from the novel that exemplify Amy’s character and contributions.
  • Create a written description of each of the symbols and what they mean.
  • Create a presentation of your award describing the symbols and why you believe Amy is deserving of the award.

Share your presentation with peers, explaining the symbols you included.

Teaching Suggestion: Students may find it beneficial to host a small-group discussion describing the symbols and what they represent in the book prior to creating their award.
