Chapter 1 Summary: “The First Night of Filming”

Dev Deshpande sips champagne and celebrates filming for the reality dating television show Ever After. Dev conceals his depression symptoms from his friend and co-worker, Jules Lu. Jules shows concern for Dev, knowing he and another co-worker, Ryan Parker, recently ended their six-year relationship. Jules and Dev meet with Skylar Jones, Ever After’s director, discussing Charles Winshaw, or Charlie, the show’s leading man. Jules remarks about Charlie’s unimpressive photo shoot, during which he fell off a white horse. Skylar agrees that Charlie struggles to embody the prince-charming type expected for his role, and she reassigns Dev as Charlie’s handler.

Charlie rides in a limousine with Maureen Scott, the showrunner. Wanting to abandon Ever After, he reflects on his reasons for agreeing to serve as the show’s leading man. Charlie works in technology but was recently ousted from his own company by his partner and friend. Charlie’s publicist, Parisha Khadim, convinced Charlie to star in Ever After to improve his public image. Charlie does not intend to find love or marry one of the show’s contestants.

Dev meets Charlie and attempts to calm him before filming begins. Charlie quickly establishes that he is uncomfortable with people touching him without first washing their hands. Dev cautions Charlie that set workers will often leave his microphone on, and the producers will take anything he says out of context if they believe it will create a more dramatic effect. Dev excites Charlie while simultaneously trying to calm him, and Charlie vomits on Dev. Set workers quickly clean them before throwing Charlie in front of cameras. Dev admires Charlie’s handsome appearance while considering his sweet, anxious personality. When Dev congratulates Charlie for his successful filming and asks about the women, Charlie confesses he believes the show is fake. Dev, who enthusiastically believes in true love, becomes visibly insulted.

Charlie struggles to focus on any of the women, distracted by Dev’s discontent. He realizes many women exploit their position on the show to publicize themselves. Charlie feels ready for the night to conclude and still considers departing the show. Jules reassures Charlie that the filming will soon end when a jealous ex-boyfriend of a contestant barges on set, punching Charlie in the face.

Dev attempts to negotiate switching producer responsibilities, so he doesn’t have to spend time with Charlie. When he notices the ex-boyfriend, he runs to intercept Charlie, but Maureen and Ryan stop him. Dev feels disappointed in himself for not intervening before the ex-boyfriend assaults Charlie. When Dev and Charlie talk while the medic tends to Charlie, Dev confesses to believing in true love. Charlie speaks honestly with Dev about why he accepted the role on Ever After and admits his desire to walk off-set. Dev convinces Charlie to stay.

Notes from the first night of filming list sound bites from the contestants’ confessionals. Several statements demonstrate how the women admire Charlie, especially his physical appearance. All of the women claim to be looking for love.

Chapter 2 Summary: “Week One”

Charlie takes a call from Parisa, who is also his closest friend as well as his publicist. Parisa threatens to sue Ever After for allowing Charlie to be physically harmed. Charlie confronts Parisa’s false claim that the women contestants are not interested in finding a husband, as most want to marry Charlie. Parisa reassures Charlie that most contestants are exploiting the show to further their careers, just like him. Charlie admits to feeling unlovable, a claim Parisa rebukes while encouraging Charlie to be open to love.

Having moved into the guest house with Charlie, Dev reviews facts about the contestants with Charlie. Charlie must select these women during “crowning ceremonies,” during which he asks each selected contestant if she would like to become his princess. If they agree, he presents the contestant with a tiara. Charlie and Dev arrive at a soccer field decorated in a Renaissance theme. The contestants face off in a jousting competition, using pool noodles as lances. Later, Charlie mentally acknowledges the women’s lack of effort in getting to know him. He listens attentively, but no one asks him any questions about himself. Charlie has a panic attack when a contestant kisses him, and Dev takes time to uncover the cause of Charlie’s distress. Charlie feels comforted by Dev’s comforting touch even though Charlie hates being touched.

Meeting with Maureen, Skylar, and the other producers days later, Dev deflects criticism about Charlie. Skylar doesn’t believe they have enough romantic content, while Maureen believes Charlie’s physical appearance hides his personality flaws. They work on developing storylines around the contestants until Charlie feels more confident. The group discusses the remaining contestants, focusing on who might make for a successful starring princess in the next season. Jules remarks about liking one contestant’s diversity as someone who is bisexual and has a diverse racial background, but Maureen immediately dismisses this idea as too bold for mainstream media. The meeting leaves Dev feeling sick. When Dev asks Jules for her opinion about how to coach Charlie, she suggests he take Charlie on practice dates since the men are already comfortable with each other.

Chapter 3 Summary: “Week Two”

Dev takes Charlie out to brunch after explaining his plan to practice dating with him. Charlie acts uncomfortable at the restaurant, and Dev learns that Charlie doesn’t speak with his family, nor does he date often. Charlie apologizes for being socially awkward and admits to lacking emotional intelligence. Slowly, Charlie grows comfortable with Dev, even allowing their knees to touch. Dev realizes that Charlie feels anxious while eating at restaurants, and they go back to the guest house. They continue to get to know each other as they work on a puzzle and watch TV. Dev apologizes for previously instructing Charlie to act like a model on Ever After, clarifying that he doesn’t believe Charlie should change for a romantic partner. When Dev reaches for a dropped puzzle piece, Charlie notices his body. Dev comments that he’s genuinely enjoying himself, and Charlie remarks that no one has ever reacted positively to a date with him. Charlie also confesses that he exercises frequently to help his mental health, not to build a physique.

Charlie talks to Parisa about the practice dates; Parisa hints that Dev might be sexually attracted to Charlie. Charlie confesses feeling more prepared to speak with the contestants but admits he’s not feeling romantically interested in anyone. Parisa suggests Charlie keep an open mind.

Charlie experiences a panic attack when asked about his past relationships. Although Dev calms him down, Ryan calls Charlie “crazy” and a “head case.” Dev shouts at Ryan while Jules whisks Charlie away to makeup. Dev asks Ryan if he thought Dev was “crazy” whenever he experienced a depressive episode while they were dating. Ryan calls Dev dramatic, refusing to apologize for his remarks. Later, Dev tells Charlie about his relationship with Ryan and his sexuality.

Dev and Charlie drink bourbon after the stressful evening. Charlie asks Dev about working for Ever After, and Dev explains loving movies and television, always intending to be a scriptwriter. When Dev tells Charlie he has a movie script featuring a gay couple in a Bollywood setting, Charlie begs to read it. Dev hesitantly agrees. Dev spills a few drops of bourbon on his shirt when reaching for his computer, and Charlie experiences an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) attack. Upon seeing the stain on Dev’s shirt, Charlie insists on cleaning the stain. Dev helps Charlie calm down by tapping out Morse code for “calm” on his shoulder, something Dev noticed Charlie do on set. He massages Charlie’s scalp until Charlie’s breathing returns to normal, asking him how he can help. Charlie realizes no one has ever asked him that before during a panic attack, and he appreciates Dev’s sensitivity. Embarrassed, Charlie runs to his bedroom.

The following morning, Charlie expects Dev to act weird around him. Instead, Dev makes Charlie vegan, gluten-free pancakes and asks Charlie about which contestants he plans on sending home. Charlie tells Dev that he has OCD, generalized anxiety, and a panic disorder. Dev replies that he assumed as much, telling Charlie his mental health doesn’t exclude him from finding true love.

Story notes for the editors review a scene of contestants discussing Charlie seeming anxious, though they quickly state they don’t think speaking about mental health will be approved by the editors. One contestant confides that she is bisexual. Maureen’s notes to the editors instruct them to remove the entire scene, instead focusing on gossip.

Chapters 1-3 Analysis

As the narrative introduces Dev and Charlie, their similarities and differences underscore their respective potentials for Personal Growth and Self-Acceptance. Having just ended his relationship Dev leans on alcohol to cope and avoid his emotions: “Dev takes an obligatory sip of champagne and wishes for something slightly stronger to dull the current aching of his too-big heart” (2). Dev believes in love, and he trusts Ever After’s surface-level mission to introduce people to their soul mates, revealing his loving, affectionate nature. Dev enjoys a close friendship with Jules, who understands his depression. Dev hides the severity of his depression from Jules, pushing away her and anyone else who gets too close. Dev lies to himself about his depression, effectively preventing him from achieving better health. Similar to Dev, Charlie attempts to hide from his OCD and anxiety symptoms as he stars on Ever After. Charlie is unable to hide from Dev, who notes, “He’s like a terrified baby bird. Like a two-hundred-twenty-pound baby bird with crippling anxiety and a fairly intense germ phobia who can’t navigate his way through a complete sentence” (20). Like Jules’s attempts to support Dev, Charlie’s publicist and friend, Parisa, supports Charlie as much as he allows her to. Both Charlie and Dev struggle to conform to the expectations others place on them. Others dismiss Charlie’s mental health symptoms while admiring his appearance and expecting him to be more masculine in his personality. Dev differs from Charlie in that he is in a position of power as Charlie’s handler behind the scenes of Ever After, attempting to manipulate Charlie to fulfill the prince charming role in front of the cameras. Meanwhile, Charlie’s power in front of the cameras as the leading man affects the show’s narrative changes. As their relationship develops, Charlie acknowledges how this power dynamic affects Charlie’s ability to grow and understand his sexuality apart from Dev fully. Moreover, Dev experienced a more supportive upbringing than Charlie. Dev is comfortable with his sexuality, open to the idea of soul mates and finding a happily ever after. Comparatively, Charlie will not consider the possibility of love, only acting in front of the camera to revive his career. As Dev and Charlie begin to recognize their similarities and differences between themselves, they’re able to identify areas of growth within each other. Dev struggles with moments of personal growth, while Charlie battles his self-acceptance, and by getting to know one another more intimately, they’re able to confront parts of themselves they must address before continuing a relationship with each other.

In the early stages of their relationship, Dev and Charlie establish The Significance of Emotional Support From Romantic Partners. Dev highlights the ramifications of the lack of support in his previous relationship when he confronts Ryan: “[H]e needs Ryan to recognize why it is so personally offensive to Dev to hear his ex-boyfriend of six years casually call a man crazy” (85). Ryan’s lack of support during Dev’s depressive episodes ultimately ended their relationship. Comparatively, when Dev supports Charlie through his anxiety and panic attacks, Charlie learns to trust Dev, empowering Charlie to further confide in Dev. In feeling understood by Dev, Charlie feels safe in his presence. Dev provides emotional support for Charlie through physical touch, something with which Charlie is typically uncomfortable. As Charlie experiences an intense moment of anxiety, Dev “knows the signs of Charlie’s anxiety now [...] Dev starts tapping a pattern over and over again with two fingers onto Charlie’s shoulder” (95). Dev pays close attention to Charlie and genuinely cares about his well-being, as is evidenced by the tapping. Dev doesn’t even know he’s tapping “calm” in Morse code until Charlie explains. In showing up emotionally for Charlie, Dev breaks through Charlie’s other barriers with physical touch, rubbing his arm, massaging his scalp, moving toward a physically intimate relationship.
