Iris often feels isolated in the novel because of the differences between the Deaf and hearing worlds. Consider how the novel addresses the motifs of isolation, communication, and empathy. What characters in the novel experience isolation and why? Why might some of the characters have difficulty communicating? How are the characters motivated by empathy?
Teaching Suggestion: Students may find it beneficial to create a graphic organizer by dividing a paper into three parts to explore the motifs of isolation, communication, and empathy by noting instances of each in the novel and including reader responses or reactions to each. Students can then add details to each of these categories that point out which characters experience these obstacles and emotions in the novel.
Differentiation Suggestion: Students with executive functioning differences may find it helpful to have step-by-step instructions to complete this task correctly. It may be helpful to offer direct spoken and written directions as frequently as necessary. Also, post the steps of the process in a place where students will expect to find important information. Students might be graded only for the work that they do well, and not have points deducted for work that is not completed. These steps may help reduce anxiety among those with executive function differences and lead to a more successful result.
