Background

Authorial Context: Meghan Quinn

Meghan Quinn is an American romance novelist. She was born in New York and raised in North Carolina. She currently resides in Colorado with her wife, two adoptive children, and several pets. In online biographical statements, Quinn self-identifies as “a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady” with a penchant for imagining “hot and steamy” conversations between potential romantic partners (“About the Author.” Google Books). Over time, this grew into Quinn’s love for writing romance novels. She is particularly known for her romance series, including The Brentwood Boys series, Port Snow series, Dating By Numbers series, Stroked series, Jett Girl series, Love & Sports series, and Vancouver Agitators series. She has also published stand-alone romance titles, such as Love Sincerely Yours, and other romance subgenre duologies and trilogies, like the Steamy Teacher Romances and her Billionaire Rom-Coms.

Quinn’s contemporary romance novels parallel other titles within the genre, including Meagan Brandy’s Say You Swear, Liz Tomforde’s Mile High, and Tessa Bailey’s Fangirl Down. These titles particularly align with Quinn’s sports romance novels and the themes and scenarios depicted in her Vancouver Agitators series. Like Brandy’s, Tomforde’s, and Bailey’s novels, Quinn’s work employs the tropes of the romance subgenre and presents sexually explicit, heated dynamics between romantic counterparts.

Quinn has an expansive social media following where she engages with her readers and fans openly. Her author website also includes a personal blog where Quinn writes about her life as a wife, mother, and romance novelist.

Series Context: Vancouver Agitators Series

So This is War is the fifth and final installment in Quinn’s Vancouver Agitators series. The novel is preceded by Kiss and Don’t Tell, Those Three Little Words, Right Man Right Time, and He’s Not My Type. The novels are connected via their main characters’ relationships with one another. All the male protagonists are players on the Vancouver Agitators hockey team. Kiss and Don’t Tell follows Pacey and Winnie’s evolving romance; Those Three Little Words tells the story of Eli and Penny’s romance; Right Man Right Time details the story of Silas and Ollie’s romance; and He’s Not My Type centers on Halsey and Blakely’s romance. Finally, So This is War tells Levi Posey and Wiley Wood’s love story.

In Chapter 2 of So This is War, Levi declares of his teammates Pacey, Eli, Silas, and Halsey, “All these assholes are head over heels, living in their lover era, because of me” (30). The first four books in the series depict Levi’s involvement in his friends’ and teammates’ romances and provide background for the primary interpersonal dynamics found in So This is War. So This is War completes the series, as it depicts the final member of this tight-knit friend group seeking out and finding love for the first time. The hockey world and overlaps in the primary cast of characters connect the series. However, each installment in the series narrows in on one sexual dynamic between the various romantic pairings. These novels all satisfy the subgenre of sports romance.
