Activities

Use these activities to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

ACTIVITY 1: “Your Invitation”

Imagine you are exceedingly wealthy or have something of extreme value that will need to be bequeathed to someone after your death. Create a challenge for your potential heirs that they must successfully complete to claim their inheritance. Think about who these potential heirs might be (family, friends, or even the public like in James Halliday’s contest) and what the best medium would be to communicate your wishes.

Teaching Suggestion: Use this activity to discuss the idea of legacy, which is a minor theme in Ready Player One. Encourage students to think about what they deem valuable and how they would like to leave their mark on the world.

ACTIVITY 2: “Your Jam”

Find a music video from the 1980s and describe how you could remake it to appeal to a modern audience. Consider what you’d change about the clothing, props, and settings to help reflect what an audience of today might expect. Also consider what might stay the same. Use popular videos from current top-10 bands or singers as inspiration for the overall thematic presentation.
