Compare and contrast the concept of Civilization in the play between Aboriginal communities and the “wetjalas.” In which way does Systematic Racism and the history of Australia inform the difference of opinions?
Teaching Suggestion: This Discussion/Analysis Prompt invites students to make connections between their own understanding of Civilization and Systematic Racism with the characters in the play. Davis explores the irony of “civilizing” the “savage” Aboriginal people in his play; while the white Australians (i.e., “wetjalas”) disapprove of Aboriginal communities’ way of life, they also refuse to supply them with resources, such as soap and employment opportunities, that would allow them to become “civilized.” An important note for students to make is that the concept of European/Western/white civilization as “superior” to Aboriginal communities directly feeds into the establishment of institutions that perpetuate Systematic Racism.
