Night Road

Jude wakes at 3:37am and sees Mia’s text that they’re on the way home, sent at 2:11am. Assuming that the teenagers are in bed, Jude enters the twins’ rooms and finds them empty. She wakes Miles and tells him that they’re late and won’t answer their phones. The doorbell rings, and Jude sees two police officers outside their door. One of the officers tells Jude and Miles that Mia, Zach, and Lexi have been in an accident and were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Miles and Jude drive to the hospital without talking. They arrive at six in the morning, and a nurse tells them that Mia’s in surgery with severe internal injuries. Zach has a chemical burn on his face and eyes and has some cracked ribs, whereas Lexi has a laceration on her forehead and a broken arm. The nurse then takes them to Zach’s room, and Jude holds his hand. When Zach wakes, he asks where he is and what happened. He also asks about Lexi and Mia, so his parents tell him what little information they know. Zach asks Jude to see Lexi and tell her that he’s ok. Jude agrees and goes to Lexi’s room.
