The IIM is a post-secondary school in Kolkata (originally Calcutta), India, which offers master’s and doctoral degrees in business among other programs. This business school was one of only two such institutions in India in the 1970s when Nooyi was a graduate student. She attended this school to attain her first master’s degree in business.

Chennai is a coastal city of 8.5 million people in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Chennai was called Madras until the state changed its name in 1996. The author grew up in Chennai and worked for the company Mettur Beardsell in the city after graduating from business school.

As CEO of PepsiCo, Nooyi introduced her Performance with Purpose initiative to guide the company in a new direction in terms of nutrition and health, fostering talent, and protecting natural resources. According to Nooyi, her strategy was a success, as PepsiCo optimized water systems to save water, made healthier snacks, and gave staff growth opportunities.
