Alice, now going by Kate, is moving into university. Her new foster parents, Rob and Sally, help her move her things into her room. Kate has died her hair and now wears glasses to disguise her appearance. She insists that she needs time to herself to unpack, and Rob and Sally leave her and drive home.
In the aftermath of the publicity surrounding her identity, Kate had felt like “a survivor from a road crash, sitting on the side of the motorway looking at the wreckage below” (313). Now, Kate is apprehensive about the new school year. As she unpacks, a neighboring student knocks on the door to introduce herself. After she leaves, Kate looks over her new possessions. She has a laptop and a new mobile phone, along with new bedding. She listens to a message from Rosie on the phone. Rosie won’t be able to call or visit for a while until things calm down. Kate also has two letters from Frankie, written after he found out about her identity. The letters beg her to call him, but Kate reflects that Alice Tully doesn’t exist anymore.
