Josh and Aly pile into the back of a power company van with Junior, six men in tactical gear, and a driver. They rehearse the plan: Junior, Aly, the driver, and the technology specialist will stay behind; Josh and the five remaining men will go inside; and they will wipe the computer, find the phone, and leave without a trace. Everyone puts on microphones to communicate, and Junior and Josh talk Aly out of going inside. The technology specialist turns off the power, deactivates the generator-powered security system, and sends them in. Josh marvels at the technology that the men use, and he plans to steal whatever he can. Once inside, the men split up, with Josh and the leader going to find the laptop. A stench in the house turns out to be dead bodies in the basement covered in cat litter, which Josh says helps to hide the smell of decomposition. The other men decide that they need to leave to avoid leaving evidence, but Josh insists on staying behind to wipe any trace of Aly from Brad’s devices.
Aly kicks Junior and runs to the house, staying outside the back door, while the men and Junior fall back to a pick-up location. Josh finds the computer, starts a program to wipe Aly’s name and address, and then finds Brad’s phone in his bedroom. Aly tells Josh that someone pulled into the driveway, and two people enter the house and go straight to the office where Josh is hiding. He braces the door and uses his fingers to stop them from unlocking the door. Based on their voices, Josh thinks that they are Brad’s parents trying to remove evidence of Brad’s crimes. Josh backs up Brad’s hard drive, completes the hack, and drops out the window of the office, hurting himself in the fall. He and Aly tell Junior to reactivate the security system, and Josh breaks a door to call the police. He and Aly flee, and they anticipate that the police will finally be able to search Brad’s home without a warrant based on the security alarm.
Aly and Josh hike through the snow toward the street and the pick-up spot. Aly can see that Josh is injured. Aly contacts Junior, who says that there are police all over the area and that he had to switch to a backup vehicle nearby. Josh pulls Aly to the ground, avoiding a spotlight scanning the forest. When it passes, they hear Junior tell his driver to reverse as the same spotlight passes over their vehicle. When the spotlight moves far enough away, Aly and Josh slowly make their way to Junior’s vehicle. Aly can feel that her toes are in danger of frostbite, and she tells Junior to turn up the heat. They make it to the vehicle and thank Junior for waiting for them. Aly wonders if their plan was always to leave Josh behind, which makes her glad she stayed back.
On the drive, Junior gets a call and reveals that the police found the dead bodies. Brad’s parents are cooperating, claiming that they did not know about Brad’s crimes. Junior plans to send a man who looks like Brad up to the Canadian border to use Brad’s credit card, which should make the police think that Brad fled the country. Aly and Josh relax, realizing that they might get away with killing Brad, and Josh jokes that he will punish Aly for leaving the van when he told her not to. Aly thanks Junior again, and he reminds Josh that Josh owes Nico a favor. Josh and Aly get into Josh’s car at a warehouse, and Aly says that she needs to examine Josh’s wounds.
Josh and Aly get back to Aly’s house, and Josh enjoys startling Aly, who is ready for the “punishment” he warned her about. Inside, Fred is excited to see them, and Josh takes a shower. Josh has a flashback to his father, brought on by the smell of the decomposing bodies in Brad’s basement. When Aly joins him in the shower, she can tell that Josh is upset, and Josh says that he can still smell the bodies on him. She smells him and says that he smells clean, and Josh tells her about almost finding a body in his father’s car trunk when he was 11 years old. Josh only regrets that he does not remember more about the incident since not all his father’s victims were found. Aly comforts Josh, and they take stock of their wounds. None of them are severe enough to require treatment, but Aly plans to ice Josh’s bruised ribs. They are both uncomfortable with leaving so much of the crime to Nico and his men since they both prefer to be in control. Josh thinks that they can get more information at the new obligatory family dinners. Aly and Josh are aroused, but they delay having sex to eat.
Aly wakes up tied to her bed, and she panics, thinking that Brad might still be alive. A red light floods the bedroom, and Josh, wearing his mask, brandishes a knife at the foot of the bed. They have sex, and Aly consistently notes that she feels safe and aroused. After having rough sex with the mask, Josh takes off the mask to talk. They confess that they are falling for each other. They have sex again without the mask or any violence, and Aly says that it is just as satisfying.
Josh and Aly go to Nico’s home for dinner dressed in formal attire. They both struggle to restrain their arousal. Nico answers the door, followed by his wife, Moira. Aly likes Moira, who jokes and prods at Nico at every opportunity. The cousins greet them in another room, but Greg is missing. Aly tries to force Nico to discuss Brad’s case immediately, but he insists on waiting until after dinner. Small talk is awkward and frequently leads to arguments between Nico and Aly, and Josh wonders if Nico is a sociopath. Moira calms Nico down, though, which tells Josh that Nico might not be too bad of a person. Dinner is filling, and Moira makes coffee afterward.
Nico explains that the police did not find any trace of anyone but Brad at the house, except Aly’s footprints. However, they think that Brad escaped the house with another man, and the planted sightings in Canada have convinced the police that Brad fled the country with an accomplice. Aly and Josh are relieved, but Nico makes a reference to Josh’s father that leads to another argument. While Aly gets ready to leave, Nico privately tells Josh that he does not trust Josh with Aly. Josh threatens Nico with the evidence he has against Nico and says that his father put him through worse suffering than Nico ever could. Nico eventually backs down, and Aly returns, sensing that something is wrong. In the car, Josh tells Aly what he did, and she wishes she could have seen him intimidate Nico. They express their love for one another.
Aly runs through the woods with a five-minute head start on Josh, who is hunting her. Their wager is that Josh will catch her in 20 minutes, and if he does, then Aly has to be in his next video for social media. Aly knows that she would get messages full of hate and jealousy because of the video, but it sounds fun. She checks her watch and sees that 15 minutes have gone by. She fantasizes about the condition of Josh’s victory, which simulates sexual assault. However, she notes that she is excited and consenting. Josh finds her, and they fight. Ultimately, Josh wins, and they have sex. Immediately afterward, Aly asks Josh to marry her but then panics when he does not respond. She turns to find him on one knee with a ring.
They drive home and talk about what they could do differently for the next chase game. At their Airbnb, they find their new kitten, Maud, in a pile of toilet paper fighting with Fred. Josh jokes that he wants eight kids, and Aly says that she is only willing to have two. Aly says that it is the best day of her life.
The closing of the novel’s conflict occurs in Josh and Aly’s attempt to clear any trace of Aly from Brad’s devices. Though they are working with Junior and Nico’s men, Josh and Aly showcase their unique team dynamic, which is essentially a combination of behaviors seen throughout the novel thus far. At the house, Josh endangers himself to protect Aly, but Aly comes after him, unwilling to leave Josh in danger. Josh thinks quickly, starting the alarm and escaping with Aly’s help. They protect each other from the police, and Aly checks and cleans Josh’s wounds when they return home. These actions highlight how Aly and Josh are more than just boyfriend and girlfriend; they operate as a team, covering each other’s weaknesses and supporting each other at any cost.
Their teamwork comes to a climax when Josh has a flashback to his father’s crimes, obsessively scrubbing “a hint of decay clinging to [his] skin” (280). Aly comforts him but worries that he sees her as a stereotypical “damsel in distress,” to which Josh replies, “I wasn’t trying to sacrifice myself for you, and the last thing I think you are is a damsel in distress. I just want to keep you safe. And I’m sorry if I’m overbearing about it, but I care about you” (283). Josh reveals the secret to his and Aly’s success in escaping the police, forcing Brad’s crimes to light, and overcoming their traumas: They genuinely want the best for each other. Neither of them sees the other as incompetent or dangerous; rather, they see each other as strong, smart, and capable. Nonetheless, they offer help anyway out of a sincere desire to make things easier, neatly resolving The Psychological Impact of Trauma on Desire.
The final challenge for Aly and Josh to overcome is Aly’s relationship with Nico. Aly has no issue prodding and arguing with Nico, but Josh is worried that he needs to prove himself to Nico to ensure that Nico’s family does not interfere with his relationship with Aly. When Nico threatens Josh, he goes “to that cold, dark place in [his] head where [he] used to hide when Dad was at his worst” (309). Just as Aly harnesses her trauma to make her a better nurse, Josh learns to use his trauma to protect himself and Aly from Nico’s threats. By turning the situation around, Josh shows Nico that he can harm Nico’s family just as much as Nico can harm Josh’s, leaving them in a stalemate. With Brad dead, Nico’s team confusing the police, and Nico himself disarmed, Josh and Aly are free to resume their relationship in peace.
As with many romances, the conclusion of the novel is Josh and Aly’s engagement in the Epilogue, but this happy ending is mixed with sexuality, in keeping with the dark romance genre. Combining The Interplay Between Fantasy, Obsession, and Reality and The Moral Complexities of Control, Consent, and Power Dynamics, Aly and Josh live out their mask fetish. Though Aly briefly worries that they might have different limits, she reassures herself: “After everything we’d been through, I trusted him enough to keep his word” (288). Fulfilling another fantasy, Josh hunts Aly in the woods. She acknowledges how their fantasies subvert the normal “dub-con,” or dubious consent, trope: “On paper, it toed the line of dubious consent, but I was more than into it, so maybe it was more like con-dub-con?” (314). As with the bulk of the sexual activity in the novel, Aly subverts the normative expression of dubious consent with vigorous arousal and active participation. As is fitting for the balanced dynamic of their relationship, even their joint proposal happens simultaneously, bringing the novel to a close with their mutual desire and happiness.
