Inside Out And Back Again

Throughout much of the novel, Hà tries to adapt to her new life in Alabama. How does that experience shape her over the course of the year? Use these questions to help you in formulating a response.

• What instances of prejudice and bullying do Hà and her family experience throughout the text?
• What specific parts of her new life does Hà struggle with? Which does she adapt to well?
• What strategies does Hà use to adapt to and succeed in her new environment?
• Does the novel end on a note of hope or despair? Why do you think so?

Teaching Suggestion: Many of the struggles that Hà faces are clear, but there are also several that are more subtle or subversive. Consider breaking the novel down by part so that groups of students are encouraged to consider all of the experiences Hà has instead of focusing on just the obvious ones.
