The fat acceptance movement is a fat activist movement (inspired by feminist values that push against thinness being the default for women) that challenges negative attitudes toward those who live in fat bodies. The movement pushes for changes in how people of size are treated. For example, fat activists confront and reject the pervasive (both public and veiled) discrimination against people of size in healthcare as well as sizeism in the fashion industry.
Roxane Gay makes a point to consider the different ways in which people like her feel about themselves and engage with the movement in Part 4.
Feminist film theorist Laura Mulvey’s theory of the “male gaze” comprises a long history of women being depicted and framed as sexual objects (in various media) from a heterosexual, masculine perspective. The same mindset can very much apply to real life women and their treatment.
This term and its effects on Gay’s life are explicitly discussed in Part 4.
