Chapter 6 Summary

The next day at school, Jamie confronts Troy again, and the two make a bet about the upcoming Cowboys versus Falcons football game. Jamie backs the Cowboys and Troy the Falcons. The loser must give the winner their official football. The Cowboys are the clear favorites for the game.

Later, Troy leads Tate and Nathan back to the Cotton Wood compound so that Troy can return the stolen football, but they discover that the hole has been filled in with concrete. They head back to Troy’s house, and he stashes the football back in his equipment bag. That evening, the friends trade football cards, and Troy trades almost all of his most valuable cards, including his Brett Favre card, so that he can possess the entire Falcons lineup. Tate later returns the Favre card before she leaves, knowing the trade was unfair.

When Troy’s mom returns home, she produces a big red “all access” pass, allowing Troy to go anywhere in the arena dome during the Cowboys versus Falcons game.

Chapter 7 Summary

Troy and his mom arrive at the game, and Troy is in awe at the spectacle. The pair meets Tessa’s boss, Cecilia Fetters. Security is tight, but when they are questioned, Troy’s mom Tessa insists he is allowed to be there

Chapter 8 Summary

Troy stands behind the bench where the players sit for the game. From this vantage point, Troy can sense the game: “The gift inside him felt like a lamp with its shade suddenly pulled off” (40). He begins predicting the plays before they happen. Thinking about besting Jamie, he calls the plays to himself and is right every time.

Troy is convinced he can help the Falcons win. He crosses the yellow line and approaches the defensive coach, Coach Krock. Krock turns and angrily grabs Troy by the collar, demanding to know who he is.

Chapter 9 Summary

Troy desperately tries to tell Krock that he knows what the Cowboys will do next, but Krock throws him to the ground and calls for security. Troy is taken away, and the Cowboys score just as Troy has predicted.

In the tunnel, a disgusted Cecilia Fetter leads Troy through the Falcons facility and puts him in the public relations office. Troy watches the game from a tv in the office, knowing exactly what the Cowboys will do next. Chewing his nails with anxiety, Troy accidently bites his fingertip. While looking for a tissue, he opens a desk drawer. Inside, he finds a stack of unused field passes.

Chapter 10 Summary

Troy uses one of the passes to work his way back onto the field, sneaking past police and lying to the security guards. He dashes over to the safety Bryan Scott and conveys his prediction of what will happen next and how Scott can counteract the play. Scott looks at him in disbelief as Seth Holloway arrives, calling Troy a crazy kid.

The players take to the field just as Coach Krock and several security guards grab Troy and drag him away. Troy’s mom and Cecilia Fetters arrive with the police, who  escort Troy and his mom straight to the parking garage. The Cowboys score again, just as Troy predicted. As Troy and Tessa are pushed through the doors, Cecilia fires Tessa.

Chapters 6-10 Analysis

This section represents Troy’s venture out of the child’s world and into a new one in the adult world with the Atlanta Falcons. At this point of the story, it is important to establish the allies and enemies that we will encounter on this journey into an unknown world. Troy’s bet with Jamie, where he once again is dragged into a childish argument, reminds us that Troy is still juvenile in his decision making. Nonetheless, Jamie is strongly established as one of Troy’s main antagonists for the narrative.

The filling of the hole represents a milestone in the story where Troy has passed the point of no return. He cannot simply undo the past and go back to the child world. Rather, he will need to find a way to move forward in order to restore balance in his life.

Like Troy’s mother’s interaction with the man who sells the boiled peanuts earlier, Tate’s return of the Brett Favre card, despite Troy trading it away, indicates she is also a true ally to Troy.

In Chapter 7, when Troy and Tessa arrive at the Dome for the first game, Troy moves into the adult world where he clearly does not appear to belong. Immediately, the gatekeeps of the adult world, the security guards, attempt to exclude him and relegate him to the role of simple spectator. At first, Tessa again proves herself as his ally. Before long, Troy’s subconscious pushes him to cross the threshold and participate in this exciting world in order to express his true self. From the sidelines, he can now see the football plays clearly and thus begin to predict them. He decides that he must try to enter this adult world and establish himself there. Things do not go smoothly, however, as he is immediately met with opposition from the more established gatekeepers of the adult world, Cecelia Fetters and Coach Krock. Troy’s first attempt to overcome these gatekeepers and express his identity fails. He crosses the threshold but is quickly thrown backwards and his mother’s livelihood becomes a casualty of the event.

Troy’s recognition of his gift as a “lamp with the shade suddenly pulled off” is the “Call to Adventure” on his Hero’s Journey (42). He can’t well ignore his new “sightedness” and feels the need to act. Tellingly, the fact that his mother loses her job isn’t enough to keep Troy from his new pursuit. This speaks to his feeling that he has a higher purpose beyond the very real financial needs of his family.
