Symbols & Motifs

Ukulele

The ukulele, which is referenced in Chapter 11 when Petey recalls his mom playing to him in the Happy Home Shelter, symbolizes Petey’s mother’s love for him. She strives to create a joyful and happy atmosphere even though “things were pretty tough” and “[they] didn’t have much money or food” (155). She reminds Petey that “[they] still have love” (155). Love is represented as the most important thing that a parent can provide for a child.

The symbolism of the ukulele is extended in Chapter 15 when Petey plays it for Li’l Petey. The unconditional love of Petey’s mother for Petey grows to encompass Petey’s unconditional love for Li’l Petey. In this way, Petey’s mother’s love and hope for their future continue in Petey and Li’l Petey’s relationship.

Toilet Humor

Toilet humor is a recurring motif throughout Dog Man: Mothering Heights, as well as through Dav Pilkey’s other works in the Captain Underpants and Dog Man series. Toilet humor is introduced in the exposition when Dog Man injures himself “in the Line of Doodie” (25). This satirical version of the oft-used phrase “Line of Duty” carries connotations of serious and life-threatening injuries acquired in a noble cause, such as defending the safety of civilians in a police chase or war zone.

The songs Li’l Petey and Molly also present satirical, toilet humor-themed versions of ones that would be familiar to the audience. The reworked songs are amusing because they are reworked to contain references to farts, poops, and toilets, such as “Stinkle Stinkle Little Fart,” which is obviously a modified version of the children’s lullaby “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” (113). This playful and silly humor reminds readers of the recurring theme of Silliness as Joyful and Important. Pilkey centralizes and celebrates toilet humor, establishing a tone of cheeky playfulness throughout his work. Furthermore, this humor is designed to appeal to his target audience of children.

The Cone of Destiny

The Cone of Destiny symbolizes creativity and friendship. When Dog Man comes to Li’l Petey—distressed about his cone—Li’l Petey and 80-HD spend time and effort to design a new cone for him that allows him to transform into a crime-fighting robot: “Just press the button on top…and all of your wildest dreams will come true!!!” (54). This enables Dog Man to silence his bullies at work and help fend off the giant Sippy Cups. The Cone of Destiny illustrates how the characters use creativity and invention to overcome problems, which connects to the recurring theme of The Value of Creativity. Li’l Petey’s concern for his friend, Dog Man, and his efforts to help him also remind readers of the recurring theme, The Power of Love; platonic love is presented as just as valuable as romantic and familial love in the story.
