Enzo tries to drive the boat out of the way of the storm, but a wave capsizes Johanna, sending him and Sawyer into the ocean. Enzo tries to grab hold of Sawyer before the wave hits, but they are separated. After swirling in the water, Enzo loses consciousness, waking up on the beach with Sawyer. Enzo is glad Sawyer is alive, but he is also irritated by her presence. They notice a massive lighthouse nearby, and Sawyer says she saw a light on in the lighthouse moments ago. Enzo’s head is bleeding, but it does not look like a severe wound, and they walk to the lighthouse. Enzo notices how Sawyer’s feet are cut by the rocks, but he is glad she is suffering. Sawyer worries the lighthouse is haunted. She prays to the “bean gods” —named after canned beans, which often survive the apocalypse in fiction—that they die a quick death. In the lighthouse, Enzo notes recently used items, a fireplace, and a dirty dish in the sink.
An old man comes down from the lighthouse with a shotgun, demanding to know why Enzo and Sawyer are in his home. Enzo is rude, but Sawyer is kind, convincing the old man to help them.
