Brigid Kemmerer is an American author born in 1978. She writes young adult fiction, especially fantasy and paranormal novels, although she writes realistic fiction as well. She is the author of multiple series and standalone novels. Kemmerer’s first books were The Elementals series, which consists of eight novels and novellas published between 2012-2014. In the first book, protagonist Becca gains the ability to control the elements (air, earth, fire, and water) from a boy named Chris, who also has the same powers. Each novel in the series features a new teenage protagonist who also learns to control the elements as part of their coming of age.
Kemmerer is also the author of the Cursebreakers series, an adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast.” The trilogy consists of A Curse So Dark and Lonely (2019), A Heart So Fierce and Broken (2021), and A Vow So Bold and Deadly (2022). Kemmerer is also the author of standalone novels Thicker Than Water (2015) and Call It What You Want (2019), as well as Forging Silver Into Stars (2022)—which is the first book in a new series that takes place in the same world as her Cursebreakers series. Although her work explores dark themes and topics such as pandemics, curses, and murder, they typically feature happy endings.
Defy the Night is the first novel in a series of the same name, which explores the kingdom of Kandala as it deals with a pandemic and political unrest. The second novel is Defend the Dawn (2022), which continues the story of Tessa, Corrick, and Harristan, as they attempt to heal the kingdom and pandemic in the aftermath of Defy the Night. However, the consuls who control the flow of Moonflowers don’t want to cooperate, so Corrick and Harristan must find a new way to get Moonflowers. Corrick and Tessa attempt to journey to the neighboring kingdom of Ostiary to do just that; meanwhile, they wrestle with relationship problems and their strenuous relationship with rebels such as Lochlan.
The third novel is Destroy the Day and slated for publication in 2024. Corrick and Tessa get separated in Ostiary, which has a tyrannical ruler. Corrick gets imprisoned, and Tessa doesn’t know how to find him or find her way home. She has to sort through strangers to figure out who can help her, while in Kandala, Harristan loses his throne but still tries to help mend his home. Ultimately, former royals, elites, and rebels need to work together to accomplish their shared goal of bringing health and stability to the kingdom.
