Lilith Iyapo

The 26-year-old protagonist and a survivor of a nuclear war. She is chosen by the Oankali to lead the first group of humans back to Earth due to her intelligence, tolerance, and rationality. Initially repulsed by the Oankali, she learns to accept them and faces challenges in uniting the two species.

An ooloi and one of Lilith's closest Oankali allies. Nikanj forms a strong bond with Lilith, genetically enhancing her and protecting her from dangers. It becomes part of a mated trio with Lilith and Joseph.

One of the humans Awakened by Lilith. Known for his rationality and intelligence, he becomes Lilith’s strongest ally among humans. He is romantically involved with Lilith and part of the mated trio with Nikanj.

The first Oankali that Lilith encounters. A patient and understanding male who helps Lilith acclimate to the Oankali's appearance and lifestyle, bringing her into his family.
