Kathleen Belew is an associate professor of history at Northwestern University. Due in large part to Bring the War Home (2018), she has become one of the leading experts on white supremacy in the United States. Professor Belew grew up in Colorado, a hotbed of right-wing militia activity that became the focus of a nationwide conversation on violence following the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, which occurred at a time when Belew was herself in high school. Her personal encounters with violence and right-wing ideology will be the feature of her next book, Home at the End of the World, which will be published by Random House. After attending the University of Washington, Belew earned her PhD in history at Yale University, and then spent 11 years at the University of Chicago before moving to Northwestern in 2022. Since the publication of Bring the War Home, she has appeared frequently on television, podcasts, and other media to discuss both her work and its connections to more contemporary white supremacist movements. She has been interviewed by Rachel Maddow, Anderson Cooper, Walter Isaacson, and NPR’s Michael Martin. She has also contributed to publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Atlantic.
