What does Finley do when a challenging situation arises? How does this change over the course of the novel? Now, consider your own responses to challenging situations in relation to Finley’s. What are some similarities and/or differences? 

Teaching Suggestion: This Prompt links directly with the Personal Connection Prompt as it encourages students to compare and contrast their responses to the protagonist’s. Only after Erin’s hospitalization is Finley able to stick up for her as well as generally share his thoughts and opinions with others. Students may benefit from some time to compile evidence based on their chapter sections before attempting to respond.

Differentiation Suggestion: For students who might benefit from analyzing the interpersonal and intrapersonal aspects of the characters, this Prompt may be adapted so students brainstorm how Finley could have better supported his peers when challenging situations arose. For this particular question, depending on the make-up of the class, an in-class discussion may be a more suitable approach.
