Activity

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Debate on the Relevance of Borders in Contemporary Society”

In this activity, students will argue the pros and cons of the presence of borders between communities today.

King’s story centers around the division of communities. Using the story, outside research, as well as your own general understanding of divisions between communities and countries, you will argue either for or against the following statement in an in-class debate: Borders are essential and relevant structures in contemporary society.

Working with your debate group, consider the following questions as you research and prepare your arguments:

  • What are the effects of borders?
  • Do borders enhance security? Do they hurt it?
  • Are borders supportive of mental health?
  • Do borders support the construction of identity and citizenship?
  • Are borders essential for international cooperation?
  • Are borders important for economies?

Finally, participate in an in-class debate. Be sure to prepare opening and closing statements, along with rebuttals, to ensure that your argument is cohesive.

Teaching Suggestion: This activity combines research, critical thinking, oral presentation, and argumentative skills in the context of King’s story. Students might be encouraged to research existing arguments pertaining to the abolition or necessity of borders, as well as draw upon modern examples of borderless, free-movement locations, including the Schengen Zone in Europe.
