Kareem and Tammi make their way through Manhattan toward the Brooklyn Bridge. Walking fast, Kareem reveals that he is supposed to DJ for Twig’s party in the evening and that he needs the money from gigs to help pay for school. The mention of school makes Tammi remember that they were supposed to go to college together before they broke up and changed course. When the topic of their upcoming and adjacent birthdays come up—which they have always celebrated together—Tammi realizes that their relationship will never be the same.
They talk about school and Kareem flatly congratulates Tammi for getting into Clark Atlanta. He ignores a dig she makes about him and asks to borrow her phone again, which annoys Tammi, who assumes he is calling his girlfriend. As they argue, Tammi feels grateful to have moved on from him. She is determined to secure the internship so that she never has to see him again.
In relation to Tammi and Kareem’s personal history with one another, this section reveals the depths of their prior relationship. Whereas in the previous story, much of Tammi’s language regarding her and Kareem’s relationship remained rather vague, Tammi makes use of more explicit and detailed language here to relay the story of their romance.
