1. Edward lives his life in a way to magnify his own greatness. While Edward does act with some kindness towards the people around him, ultimately the kindnesses he performs are for selfish gain. Edward’s neglect of his wife and family for his own desire to be a big fish seems selfish. (Various parts)

2. While William imagines different scenarios for his father’s death, what actually happened is drastically different from William’s first imaginings. At the beginning of the novel, Edward approaches his father with sarcasm and asks him hard questions about why he was never around. At the novel’s conclusion, William still wishes he knew his father but opts to be in the story Edward tells rather than address some of the difficult questions he has for his father.
