Salahudin, or Sal, is a first-generation American of Pakistani descent. His parents own the Clouds’ Rest Inn Motel. He struggles with family issues, including a father's alcohol addiction and financial problems, while navigating his complex relationship with Noor.

Misbah is Salahudin's mother and like a mother to Noor. She helps run the family motel and is a strong influence in maintaining cultural traditions. Her health deteriorates during the story, deeply affecting her family.

Chachu is Noor's uncle who brought her to the U.S. He runs a liquor store and harbors resentment towards Noor for changes in his life. He despises Pakistani culture and tries to isolate Noor from it.

Toufiq, Salahudin's father, struggles with alcohol addiction. He has faced multiple personal tragedies, which contribute to his dependence on alcohol. His strained relationship with his family is a central element in the narrative.

Imam Shafiq is a religious leader at the local mosque. He offers support and guidance to Noor and Salahudin, becoming a significant figure in their lives and helping create a supportive community for them.

Khadija is Imam Shafiq's wife and works as an attorney. She provides legal advice and support to Noor and serves as a strong, compassionate figure in her life, especially during challenging times.

Jamie is Noor's classmate and academic rival. She becomes increasingly hostile and discriminatory toward Noor, ultimately revealing sensitive information that exacerbates Noor's problems with her uncle.

Ashlee is Salahudin's ex-girlfriend, with whom he maintains a friendship. She faces personal struggles, including using pain medication, and later becomes a supportive friend to Noor.
