Moon’s father who raised him in isolation after the death of Moon's mother and imparted skills and a distrust of authority. He served in the Vietnam War, which influenced his decision to live remotely.

A law officer in Sumter County who abuses his power and is often in conflict with Moon, embodying the type of authority Moon was taught to distrust.

Moon’s first friend at Pinson, a 10-year-old boy living as a ward of the state with a progressive illness. He is enthusiastic about the idea of escaping to Alaska.
