A sickness is spreading in the village of Ófandauth, and Bardholt sends the lith to investigate and save the Issyn, an influential ally. When they reach the town, the lith is warned to not enter, as the sickness, which begins with redness in the fingers, is spread by touch. Nonetheless, they enter the abandoned town and split up. When they did not return, Tuva searched and found Meren dead and her child gone.

The Prioress is sick and deteriorating quickly, meaning that Esbar will soon take over as Prioress. In private, Esbar expresses unease at the relationship between Tuva and Canthe. They decide to keep the death from Siyu.

Part 2 Analysis

The events of the second part of A Day of Fallen Night follow the characters as the threat of the wyrms and their draconic armies builds, and the characters continue to grapple with their personal struggles. While Wulf investigates the illness passed on by the wyrms and Tuva and the Priory begin preparing for the coming conflict, Dumai and Glorian face more personal trials. Glorian faces the pressures of betrothal while contending with her mother’s rigid treatment of her, Dumai, finally installed at court, faces off with the River Lord and his daughter Nikeya.

Aside from the deadly wyrms, Nikeya plays the primary antagonistic role in Dumai’s life during much of the novel. She reveals the secret of her father to court and struggles to prove to Dumai that she can be trusted. She is perceived as a puppet of her father and struggles to emerge from his shadow. The political imbalance between the Kuposa and Noziken is a representation of Balance Between Opposing Forces on a human level. The Kuposa, meant to be advisors, seek to dethrone the Noziken and pursue their own interests. Nikeya is pitted against Dumai, and The River Lord tries his hardest to place Dumai in an unfavorable position, especially when it comes to her relationship with her half-Kuposa sister: “He had guessed what she meant to do to Suzumai, and he was going to make every gain hurt. Even as she tried to put roots down at court, he planted weeds around her, to strangle her before she bloomed” (244). This description of the River Lord’s actions portrays the court as a garden, which should seek harmony and balance in the pursuit of beauty. A harmonious court and productive Kuposa-Noziken relationship would benefit the whole of Seiiki. And yet, both the River Lord and Emperor Jorodu attempt to freeze the other out, pursuing different heirs for the throne and creating tension for all.

Throughout the first half of the novel, Glorian struggles to connect with her mother. Where her father, King Bardholt, is warm and supportive, Sabran is cold and strict. Sabran is unforgiving when it comes to duty, leading Glorian to feel as though she is being forced to marry with no compassion from her mother. Again, Motherhood as a Guiding Force plays a role in the life of Glorian, with her mother’s own experiences informing her actions as a mother. Sabran not only holds the duty of being a mother, but also the hefty duty of leading Inys. She took the throne after a string of weak and violent queens and has since worked to bring the realm back to its former glory. Therefore, when Glorian is attacked by a would-be assassin, Sabran throws herself between them not only to protect her child, but to protect her queendom, fully believing in the power of their line. This action finally results in Sabran treating Glorian with warmth: “In the hours after the attack, no one could have come between them. Queen Sabran […] watched over her all night, stroking her hair whenever she woke. Glorian slept fitfully—yet also never felt so safe, comforted by her own mother, swaddled in her love at last” (290). Sabran allows herself to be Glorian’s mother, not her queen, in this moment. It is difficult for Glorian to understand, but Sabran’s harsh actions are influenced by her efforts to protect Glorian and the realm. Sabran uses her past experiences as a young heir to steel Glorian in preparation for her reign. In their final conversation together, Sabran opens up to Glorian: “No one taught me to be a mother, or a queen. I have only tried to armour you. The crown does not show mercy” (338). Sabran had no instruction when becoming a mother and ruler, so she is harsh but well-meaning toward Glorian. Sabran inherited turmoil and tries to create a more peaceful queendom for Glorian to inherit. This final conversation, though tragic, illuminates much for Glorian and will impact her treatment of her own daughter in the closing chapters of the novel. Sabran’s actions, and the impact they will have on Glorian, demonstrate the theme Motherhood as a Guiding Force, as it is often a protective instinct more than a well-thought-out plan.
