A Dark Brown Dog

Describe the relationship between the child and dog. How does it evolve? Consider this relationship in the context of hierarchical power structures. Why does the child abuse the dog? Why does the child protect him?

Crane intentionally leaves the characters nameless, calling them “the child,” “the father,” and “the dark-brown dog,” etc. Why does he do this? 

There is no direct dialogue in the story. Why is that? What effect does it have?
